Brazil in Chicago '12! A Percussion Program in association with The Chicago Latin Jazz Workshop
with Geraldo de Oliveira, faculty and Dann Sherrill, guest artist in at The Program The percussion instruments and rhythms of Brazil are the foundation of the rich musical tradtions of both Brazil itself, and of the many other countries which draw upon this complex and beautiful music as part of their own. Brazil is a major influence on our drumming, yet many American percussionists have not studied the rhythms as they are played by the Brazilians themselves. You may know Samba and Bossa Nova, but have you mastered Batucada, Frevo, Maracatú, Samba-Reggae, and the many other rhythms which Brazilian drummers bring to their music? If not, here's your chance! The Faculty Geraldo
de Oliveira Geraldo De Oliveira started playing percussion professionally at the age of fourteen in his hometown, Belo Horizonte, in Brazil. Since moving to the United States in 1975, he has performed and recorded with Buddy Rich, Ramsey Lewis,The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Judy Roberts, Rich Fudoli, Bobby Lewis, Don Stiemberg, Chévere, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Toninho Horta, and many others. He is presently a faculty member for the Birch Creek Music Center, the Old Town School of Folk Music, and is a Ravinia Jazz Mentor. Geraldo performs regularly with his own Brazilian group, the Copacabana Trio.
Nashville percussionist, Dann Sherrill plays Afro-Cuban and Brazilian drums. He is a session musician and has performed or recorded with Steve Winwood, Armando Perazza, Oscar Castro Neves, Nino Segarra, Maelo Ruiz, and Arturo Sandoval, among others.
